Important Baby Things To Buy Before Birth In Nigeria

Preparing for the arrival of your baby is such a special time, but it can also feel overwhelming, especially when there’s so much to think about.

There are important baby things to buy before birth in Nigeria that you simply can’t do without. And having these items ready before your little one arrives can make all the difference in ensuring a smooth and stress-free delivery.

We understand how exhausting it can be to juggle everything at once, from doctor’s appointments to setting up the nursery. To help lighten the load and bring some peace of mind, we’ve put together a list of the essential baby items you’ll need before your baby arrives in Nigeria.

These essentials will not only make your life easier but also ensure that you’re fully prepared to welcome your new bundle of joy. Here are the baby things to buy before birth in Nigeria:

1. Crib or Sleeping Arrangement

Your baby will need a safe place to sleep, whether it’s a crib, a bassinet, or a co-sleeper. A crib is an excellent choice if your space allows it. Find a crib that is no more than 6 cm (2 ½ in) – and meets all the current safety standards.

If you decide on a crib, you also need to get a fire-retardant mattress, as well as a few crib sheets. It’s recommended that you steer clear of pillows, crib bumpers, or fluffy comforters for your baby, as they can be a risk for suffocation.

2. Baby Linens

Buy several waterproof crib sheets and some lightweight receiving blankets. Consider a sheet saver (it goes on over the fitted sheet) for added ease. Have more than one set on hand in case a wash-up isn’t available at the right time.

3. Diapers and Changing Essentials

You will be changing a lot of diapers so, regardless of whether you go with reusable cloth diapers or disposable ones, make sure you have plenty of diapers and wipes, a changing pad, and diaper rash ointment.

You will also want a place to put the dirty diapers, a pail or bucket, and you will want to keep a stash of baby Pampers and wipes nearby.

4. Baby Clothing

Simplicity and convenience are the best ideas for those first few months, so you need at least six onesies and several pairs of socks. If it is cool, a sweater or cap will help, too. Also, swaddle blankets, baby caps, unisex wear, and drawstring infant gowns will keep your baby warm.

5. Bathing Supplies

Your baby will need a baby bathtub with a sponge insert/foam pad and some soft baby soap, tearless shampoo, sponge/cloth washcloths, towels, nail clippers, or nail scissors with rounded tips.

You will also need some good quality baby oil, baby powder, and olive oil. For your baby’s daily after-bath skincare routine, you’ll need a few squirts of moisturizing lotion, petroleum jelly, and cream for dry skin.

You’ll need Jik and detergents to keep your baby’s clothes clean and smelling fresh.

6. Feeding Essentials

Even if you plan to breastfeed, you are probably going to need bottles and nipples to feed your pumped milk. A pump is also a good idea – you never know when you might want to express milk when you are not with your baby. And you’ll need some formula, of course, along with bibs, burp cloths, and a bottle brush.

7. Infant Car Seat

The most crucial piece of equipment to take your baby home if you don’t have anyone to help is an infant car seat that faces the rear. Some car seats can also function as a carrier and a stroller attachment.

8. Medical Supplies

Your medical kit bag should have a digital thermometer, a bulb syringe, and some common first-aid material. Ask your gynecologist or pediatrician for a few medicines or ointments that your baby might need. You’ll need methylated spirit, cotton wool, and towels for care of the umbilical cord. Don’t forget a cord clamp (two-piecer, very useful at the time of birth).

9. Breastfeeding Supplies

You need a breast pump, nursing pads, nipple cream, and a good nursing pillow if you are unable to breastfeed.

10. Additional Useful Items

While not essential, the following items can make life with a newborn easier:

  1. Baby Sling: Allows you to carry your baby hands-free.
  2. Baby Monitor: Helps you keep an ear on your baby while in another room.
  3. Diaper Bag: Essential for outings, providing space for diapers, wipes, and other necessities.
  4. Changing Table: Provides a dedicated space for diaper changes with storage for supplies.
  5. Crib Mobile: Adds visual interest and can help soothe your baby to sleep.
  6. Night Light: Makes late-night feedings or diaper changes easier.
  7. CD Player: Some babies enjoy calming music or lullabies.

These are the important baby things to buy before birth in Nigeria that will prepare you for your baby to come home. Remember that your baby will need your love and you more than any baby item.
